Did you know that approximately 10% of the world's population belongs to the LGBTQ+ community? This figure is a reminder of the importance of recognizing and valuing diversity in our society. Likewise, Gay Pride Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about this reality and promote equal rights and opportunities for all.

In commemoration of the events of the Stonewall riots in 1969, June was dedicated to celebrating Gay Pride Month. A colorful and joyful celebration that promotes acceptance and respect for the LGBTQ+ community worldwide.

To help you learn more about the origins and importance of this celebration, below are three interesting facts about it.

  1. June was chosen as Gay Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969. A date that marked the courageous resistance of the LGBTQ+ community to oppression and sparked a global movement.
  2. Over the years, the LGBTQ+ community has made significant strides in the fight for equality and human rights. More than 70 countries have decriminalized homosexuality, and at least 29 countries have approved marriage equality. These achievements are a powerful reminder that change is possible.
  3. New York City's Gay Pride parade is one of the largest in the world. In 2019, more than 5 million people filled the streets of Manhattan. with an explosion of colors and joy.

Interesting fact you probably didn't know:

To honor the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Gilbert Baker designed the first flag for the parade and, with 30 volunteers, hand-dyed and sewed the first two flags. On this flag, which currently has six colored stripes but originally had eight, each color has a meaning:

Rosa : Sexuality

Red : Life.

Orange : Healing.

Yellow : Sunlight.

Green : Nature.

Turquoise : Magic and art.

Indigo : Serenity and harmony.

Purple : The spirit
